May 2017

Well, I’ve not managed to write up many of the plethora of wrestling events I’ve seen recently, but I have managed to keep track of matches I loved. Here is the top 5 from May, followed by the full list.

5: Breezango vs The Usos – Backlash

This match had it all, a great story, some amazing wrestling and some of the best comedy going. I’m loving the heel Usos , but to me Breezango are the current standout team.in the WWE. Real.chemistry in the ring and when they are running comedy. Two guys who’ve been handed shoddy gimmicks making the best of it and doing it really well. I see this springboarding two amazing careers.

4: Marty Scurll vs Dragon Lee: BOSJ

This was one of a plethora of amazing matches from and amazing tournament. I knew how good most of the competitors were at the outset, but is never seen Dragon Lee before and he’s now one of my favourites.

3: Riddle vs Cobb – Super Strong Style 16

This match was a dream match for me and it lived up to my massively high expectations. Two of the best indie wrestlers in the world and I very much enjoyed every no it’s of it.

2: Will Ospreay vs Kushida – BOSJ Final

This whole tournament as phenomenal but the final was a step above even the other brilliant matches. Kushida is the whole package, And Ospreay will be very soon and is already way better than anyone should be at such a young age. The juniors have raised the bar. The G1 have a lot to live up to.

1: Pete Dunne vs Tyler Bate – Takeover Chicago

This match as incredible and I think really put UK wrestling on the map in a big, big way. They built a phenomenal story, had the crowd hooked nd had some great spots. They even had a vociferous chicago crowd chanting “UK UK UK”, superb.

March 2017

It seems weird that I’m writing this now,at rather end of April, but it has taken me a while to catch up on the plethora of events that happened in march and even now I’ve not seen everything I wanted to. There has been some amazing events in march, wXw’s 16 Carat being my favourite overall. Many wrestlers have hit my list multiple times this month and it has been massively hard to pick a top 5. But I’ve tried to anyhow, limited to 1 per card and 1 per wrestler…..

5: Zack Gibson vs El Ligero – PROGRESS 46

This matchbwas the funniest match I’ve seen in ages, plus it told a great story and furthered a great feud really well. I was lucky enough to be there for it and loved it.

4:  SPPT vs JML – PROGRESS Orlando

4 of the most talented wrestlers in the world put in one hell of a show. Possibly the best match of mania weekend, certainly the best of the weekend that fell in march. Big spots, plenty of emotion. Great all round.

3: Shibata vs Ishii – NJCUP Semi Final

This was an incredible match from two of the world’s best strikers. I was heavily invested in it and it took me on an emotional rollercoaster. The whole New Japan Cup was brilliant,  but this match was a step above.

2: Speedball Mike Bailey vs Matt Riddle – wXw 16 Carat Gold Night 2

I was genuinely in awe throughout this one. It was fast, it was furious, it was funny and it had me hooked. I didn’t want it to end. Two guys go have come to pro wrestling from different fighting backgrounds putting on a match that had it all.

1: Walter vs David Starr – wXw 16 Carat Gold night 1

It was tough to pick a top 5, even tougher to pick a top 1, but this was, for me, the best of March. David Starr is,in my opinion, one of the top 3 wrestlers in the world at the moment and Walter is just incredible. The emotion, the power, the spots and the storybook this match were intense. A phenomenal match, and my match of the month.

January 2017

What a month January 2017 has been in the world of Pro-Wrestling. It’s been amazing throughout. New Japan kicked it off with Wrestlekingdom which was phenomenonal and included 4 of the best matches you’ll ever see back to back to close the show. But then the rest of the world followed their lead and show after show, match after match, we’ve seen some amazing things.

This post isn’t going to be a comprehensive write up of the month, although if thats what you want my podcast cohost @ChimeraRouge has done that here. I’m going to run down my top 5 matches. And I’m going to follow that up with a list of all the matches I’ve loved, do check them out if you haven’t seen them. I feel I should mention here that I haven’t seen everything, so if you loved a match, or an event, that took place in January 2017 and it isn’t listed please let me know and I will endeavour to check it out. There are still a couple of things I may add to this list without prompting,as I do hope to watch WXW London, NJPW Fantastic Maina and Smash wrestling’s latest offering.

5. Marty Scurll, Pete Dunne and Travis Banks vs Will Ospreay, Ryan Smile and Shane Strickland

This match was really something special. 6 phenomenally talented guys who had come.off amazing years in 2016 going at it, hell for leather. There were some awesome spots,  some fantastic bits of technical wrestling, some great double and triple teams and some excellent comedy – Scurll and Co selling T Shirts at ringside during the match springs to mind!

4. Shinsuke Nakamura vs Bobby Roode – NXT Takeover: San Antonio

This match was incredible. Bobby Roode is a master or ring psychology and storytelling and this match was a clinic in it. Both wrestlers are amazing and I think this was, from a purely storytelling point of view, the best I’ve seen in years. I look forward to seeing more of Bobby Roode at the top of the NXT card.

3. John Cena vs AJ Styles – WWE Royal Rumble

I feel that this match was booked in response to the amazing matches at Wrestle Kingdom. It felt like it should have been saved for mania, to be honest, but that didn’t matter too much. It was still an incredible, incredible match. It had everything and it was something special. The best WWE main roster match, probably since Cena Punk at MITB 2011, in my view.

2. Okada vs Omega – New Japan Wrestle Kingdom

The match that had the whole world talking. Dave Meltzer called it the beat match in professional wrestling history and gave it six stars. It was incredible from start.to finish. It built well, it included amazing sections covering pretty much every style you can imagnetic and had a great nara time throughout. It inspired me to spend an entire day watching previous Okada matches. I didn’t think I’d see a match anywhere near as good as this for ages.

But then….

1. Marty Scurll vs Zack Sabre Jr – RevPro High Stakes

This match was incredible and blew me away entirely. I’ve followed both guys for a while and seen them wrestle with and against each other many times. Knowing a bit about that history and seeing it play out in the ring was incredible. My friend called it “the best British wrestlingarch ever”, I’m inclined to think that that under sells it a bit. Incredible match and I don’t remember ever seeing one that I enjoyed more.

It is worth noting that Pete Dunne has in fact been in the highest number (4) of matches this month that I have felt the need to put on the list Marty Scurll appears 3 times and ZSJ, Shibata, MAndrews and Matt Riddle all appear twice in singles matches (Marty appears 4 and MAndrews appears 3 times if you count the Thunderbastard!). Also, the London Riots appear twice. What a great month of matches.

RISE – Live at the Brudenell

The show opened with a 12 man over the top rope Battle Royal or sorts. It was like the royal rumble with a new entrant coming down “every 2 minutes” and then when the match was down to 2 guys it became a one fall pin or submission match. This was a great match and was booked really well. There were lots of great stories being told and for me it was awesome to see two of my favourite local wrestlers (Alex Henry and David Graves) team up for a long period of it. The match must have gone around 40 minutes and I enjoyed every second. Brilliant start to the night, although the ceiling didn’t make it through this one. The ceiling is low and the ring fairly high, a ceiling tile fell and became a weapon.it was great to see Pastor win havin been in it from the start and I thought the ending was booked very well.

Joe Vega v Kid Lux

This was a great match two, some good heel work on show and some great moves and spots. The first match had the crowd going and they continued to enjoy this.

Roxy v Nina Samuel
This was a brilliant match. Two superbly talented wrestlers putting it all on the line. Great heel work from and Roxy is incredibly over as a face.

Your Uncle Bobby  vs whizz kid

Bobby had started the rumble and done a great stint. He then came out and worked the crowd  back up after a short interval. Then he pulled double duty and wrestled a stonking match against Whizz Kidd.

Saxon Huxley vs Liam Slater

The main event pitted Saxon “MuscleCat” Huxley against Liam “The Lazarus Kid” Slater. Both these guys are phenomenal. Saxon is due to compete in the upcoming WWE UK Championship and Liam Slater seems to have championships everywhere.

The start was incredible, when Liam arrived (having travelled from Newcastle where he had wrestled earlier in the evening) the crowd when mental. I genuinely don’t think I have ever seem a wrestler be totally over with every single member of the audience before but Liam was. I assume partly because he’s lcoal,  partly because he’s good fun, has a fun entrance and dances, and partly cos he’s absolutely amazing in the ring.

I’ve seen him wrestle a number of times now and each match seems to be better than the last. I forsee a big future for Liam.

Saxondale is also incredible. I’ve only seen 3 of his matches before but it one has been great and I’d love him to do well in the WWE tournament.

After the match, the Pastor came out to round the story off from the rumble and to build a further story for the next event.

I enjoyed the event over all and look forward to seeing RISE again in the future.
